SPINNING
..or "the statue game"

THE METHOD I'M USING

It's an extension of the targetting. Just a fun thing really. Once the llama is target-wise, it is a simple matter to hold it above his head and, little-by-little, rewarding each small step, move the target around in a circular pattern until target and llama have finally gone full-circle. There is a tendency at first for the llama to turn back before the halfway point to get his reward, but once he has gone beyond this point it is pretty easy to get the full

circle. At this stage when the exercise is secure, a verbal cue can be added. I use "Turn aroundabout". Gradually, the target can be dispensed with and, hands now free, a hand sign can be cued in. I use a finger describing an "O" shape in front of the llama's nose.

HOW WE'RE DOING

The story so far: Though I concentrate on Oscar and Toby for Fun activities these days, both Dillon and Thomas spin as well as Oscar...and it's hard getting them to stop doing it off-cue sometimes; they're ever hopeful. ( David, because of his head-shyness, was never trained to do this behaviour.) Toby isn't targetwise yet, so I have yet to try this.

RECENT NOTES ON PROGRESS

Now I have taught Toby! It took two sessions and a total of about 20 mins. The first session involved getting him targetwise. The second session was about following the target in a circle, adding the verbal cue, then fading the target in favour of a hand signal. 'trouble is now I get lots of off-cue spinning and spinning when I've asked for summit else.

Oscar is readily giving me a double spin these days and even a triple,
